IRS Online Accounts and Identity Protection PINs: A Key Defense Against Scammers

In recent years, tax-related identity theft has increased significantly in the United States. Scammers use stolen personal information to file fraudulent tax returns and claim refunds that are not theirs. To combat this, the IRS offers a powerful and free tool: the Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).
Taxpayers are strongly encouraged to create an online IRS account and request an IP PIN as a preventive measure — even if they have never been victims of fraud.

What is an IP PIN and who can get one?
The IP PIN is a six-digit number known only by the IRS and the taxpayer. This number must be entered when filing a tax return to verify the taxpayer’s identity and prevent someone else from filing a false return using their information.
Key points:
Available to everyone: Anyone with an SSN or ITIN can request an IP PIN, including those living abroad.
Preventive protection: You can get one even if you are not required to file a return.
Not generated by preparers: The taxpayer must obtain it directly, though a tax professional can use it afterward to file.
Renews every year: For security reasons, a new IP PIN is issued annually.
Required once obtained: If you get an IP PIN, you must use it for all federal tax returns filed that year — current, amended, or prior year returns.
The program is voluntary, but the IRS and tax professionals strongly recommend it, especially for those who have previously experienced identity theft.

How to request an IP PIN
The fastest and easiest way is through your IRS Online Account, under the “Profile” section. If you do not yet have an account, you will need to register and verify your identity. It is recommended to review the identity verification requirements beforehand to avoid delays.
If you cannot verify your identity online:
Individuals with income below $84,000 (single) or $168,000 (joint) can apply using Form 15227 (EN-SP).
Another option is to schedule an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) for in-person identity verification.
Taxpayers who have already suffered from identity theft often benefit greatly from the IP PIN because it helps prevent repeat fraud.
