When are service pets deductible?

Medical service pets (such as guide dogs or support animals for physical or mental disabilities) may be deductible as medical expenses on Schedule A of Form 1040 , provided the following conditions are met:

✅ They are necessary due to medical recommendation.

✅ Be trained to assist with a certified disability.

✅ You are itemizing deductions (not using the standard deduction).

Deductible expenses include:

🔹 Purchase or adoption of the animal

🔹 Specialized training

🔹 Special foods related to the medical condition

🔹 Veterinary care

🔹 Maintenance directly linked to medical care

What supports it?

IRS Publication 502 – Medical and Dental Expenses states that deductible medical expenses include those related to the purchase, training, and maintenance of guide or service animals .

This applies to pets specifically trained to assist people with certified physical or mental disabilities.

⚠️ Important:

You cannot deduct a regular pet, even if it provides emotional support, unless you have official medical documentation and the animal is professionally trained to provide assistance.

Additionally, the expense must exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) to be deductible on Schedule A of Form 1040.
